Lofts

Common Problems

  • Problems occur when heated air escapes through the ceiling into the attic from upper levels of the home and is replaced in lower levels of the home by drawn-in, outdoor air. This occurs with conventional insulation types, such as fiberglass and cellulose, because they don’t meet air barrier standards.  Therefore they don’t sufficiently stop air flow/leaks like Icynene® spray foam insulation does, and they can sag or settle over time.
  • In heavy snowfall areas, ice damming is a common problem due to warm, moist interior air coming into contact with the cold roof surface, where the moisture then condenses and freezes.

Results of Insulating Attic Floor with Icynene Spray Foam Insulation

  • Improves in energy performance for savings of up to 50%
  • Minimizes potential for water/moisture damage and associated health concerns (mold) that can result from ice dams.

Basements

Common Problems

  • Cold and uncomfortable floors
  • Unwanted noises on the main floor originating from the basement
  • Buckling hardwood floors due to moisture build-up in the floor system
  • Moisture build-up on floor insulation if conventional material (insulation other than Icynene spray foam insulation) is used
  • For basement HVAC systems:
    • Sweating ductwork
    • Energy loss due to leaky ductwork/HVAC inefficiency

Results of Using Icynene Spray Foam for Basement Insulation

  • Even floor temperatures for added comfort
  • Quieter spaces on main floor
  • Minimized potential for buckling of hardwood floors
  • Air-seal with no gaps or seams, even in difficult-to-insulate areas
  • Increased durability of the structure

Crawl Spaces

Common Problems

  • Cold and uncomfortable floors
  • Sagging insulation materials
  • Moisture build-up on floor insulation if conventional material (insulation other than Icynene spray foam insulation) is used
  • Buckling hardwood floors
  • For crawl space HVAC systems:
    • Sweating ductwork
    • Energy loss due to leaky ductwork/HVAC inefficiency

Results of Using Icynene Spray Foam Insulation

  • Even floor temperatures for added comfort
  • The tenacious adhesive characteristics of Icynene spray foam insulation allow for a seamless bond with the substrate, free from sagging or voids of any kind. This means an evenly heated/cooled floor and interior space for optimal comfort.
  • Conditioned area for ductwork and air handlers allows the HVAC equipment to operate more efficiently, increasing energy savings
  • Effective air-seal in difficult-to-insulate areas
  • Increased durability of the structure
  • For crawl space HVAC systems:
    • Conditioned area for ductwork and air handlers, allowing the HVAC equipment to operate more efficiently for increased energy savings
    • Minimized infiltration of air and accompanying moisture, preventing condensing on the ductwork
    • Circulation of cleaner air inside the home

Internal Wall Spray Foam Insulation

Icynene® spray foam insulation may be used on internal walls and ceilings to dampen sound or to keep out pollutants.

Dampening sound from one room to another

Icynene spray foam insulation is used on internal walls to dampen sound from one room to another, for example in:

  • Home theaters
  • Playrooms
  • Workshops
  • Around plumbing runs – e.g. showers and toilet flushing

Keeping out pollutants

You can separate breathing air from pollutants you can’t eliminate by air-sealing walls and ceilings between living spaces and:

  • Garages
  • Combustion furnaces and water heaters
  • Combustion closets
  • Chemical storage areas

External Wall Spray Foam Insulation

Using Icynene® spray foam insulation can help protect against energy loss through external walls, as well as providing other benefits:

Common Problems

  • Up to 40% of energy loss is due to uncontrolled air leakage.
  • Up to 99% of moisture travels in the air and can build up inside a home through daily activities like cooking and showering. If moisture carried by air is allowed to move through the walls it can condense within the walls leading to related problems such as mold.
  • Unwanted noises are heard originating from outside.
  • Drafts cause hot/cold spots.
  • Pollutants including allergens can travel with air that passes through walls, causing health issues.
  • Rim joists, where the floor meets the wall, are difficult to insulate with traditional insulation and create cold bridges.

Results of Using Icynene Spray Foam for External Wall Insulation

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Improved indoor air quality (IAQ)
  • Peace and quiet
  • Rim joists are easier to insulate with Icynene spray foam insulation so you can protect against the energy loss in cold spots

Why is it that everyone is now having spray foam insulation?

  • Lower Heating Bills – With its excellent thermal insulation properties, spray foam provides an insulated roof and can reduce your heating bills by up to 50%
  • A Cleaner More Usable Loft – By sealing the roof against draughts, and also sealing the old mortar pointing on the inside of some roofs, spray foam provides a warmer, cleaner, less dusty and usable loft space
  • No more slate tiles coming lose in a storm – By bonding to slate tiles, spray insulation not only holds them in place – it holds them tight. Meaning not only will you not lose any tiles, but your roof is actually stronger!
