Looking to cut down energy bills? Try Icynene open cell or closed cell spray foam. It’s one of the most effective insulation solutions.

The insulation material promises several benefits. It lowers energy bills, helps save costs in the long term, and the installation process is easy. It also offers soundproofing, improved indoor air quality, and increased comfort. Naturally, the popularity of open cell and closed cell Icynene insulation has soared in the UK.

But some people are still wary of insulation materials. This is due to safety concerns and misconceptions on Icynene dangers. As accredited Icynene insulation contractors, we have encountered many questions about Icynene problems. Thus, we have observed safety concerns about Icynene dangers and cleared up 4 key misconceptions.

Our priority is to safeguard the safety of our clients with their spray foam insulation.

Icynene – 4 Misconceptions

1. Leftover Icynene is Deposited in Landfills

The Icynene Problem:

When Icynene open cell is applied, it expands. Any extra insulation material that overflows needs to be removed. The leftover Icynene is then deposited in landfills. This makes it harmful to the environment.

The Icynene Solution:

If applied right, there should be no leftover Icynene. And if there are leftovers, it is placed in a container and disposed of by a licensed waste disposal contractor according to local regulations.

Icynene open cell is also an environmentally safe product. It does not contain any CFCs, HFAs, HCFCs, or volatile organic compounds. It is a totally inert product that will not contaminate the ground. Besides, Icynene are actively looking at new uses for waste foam such as soil aeration and irrigation.

2. Icynene Produced Unpleasant Odours

The Icynene Problem:

Icynene off-gassing produces unpleasant chemical odours during the installation process. This is especially a problem is it’s not applied properly.

The Icynene Solution:

According to an official statement from Icynene, the product does not produce unpleasant odours. “Icynene spray foam insulation has been tested extensively for off-gassing by several reputable third-party laboratories, regulators, and research institutions.

“Again, once Icynene spray foam is cured, the house or building is safe for re-occupancy (following specified re-occupancy and ventilation guidelines). So, there is no reason to worry about “off-gassing” of Icynene spray foam insulation beyond the exclusion period.”

3. Icynene Produced Mould Problems

The Icynene Problem:

Water can pass through Icynene spray foam insulation to the room. This leads to condensation risk, dampness and Icynene mould problems.

The Icynene Solution:

According to the Encyclopaedia of Building and Environmental Inspection, mould is not found in Icynene. As part of Icynene’s European Technical Approval process, the product was tested for the growth of mould. It passed this test and has no food value for mould spores to germinate. If the correct installation process is followed, Icynene actually reduces condensation risks.

4. Icynene Exposes People to Harmful Chemicals

The Icynene Problem:

Spray foam insulation could still contain ‘uncured’ isocyanates if it isn’t fully ‘cured’. This exposes people to the risk of asthma, lung damage, breathing problems, sensitization and skin or eye irritation.

The Icynene Solution:

Icynene spray foam contractors ensure that the job site is vacated and ventilated at least 2 hours before and after spraying. This ensures the spray foam insulation components are completely cured. Once this has occurred, there is no risk of Icynene health issues or problems! Plus, spray foam insulation has existed for over 25 years. When properly applied by approved installers, there are no known incidents of serious illness due to exposure.
